During the Turkish War of Independence, the family played a distinguished role in organising maritime logistics through İnebolu for the Turkish National Forces. In recognition of this service, Atatürk later conferred upon the family the surname Yıldıran. Aile, Kurtuluş Savaşı sırasında Türk askerine cephane ve silah taşıdı. Bu hizmet için Atatürk, aileye Yıldıran soyadını verdi.
