The Yıldıran house has worked the Turkish trades since before the Republic. Through empire and republic, war and peace, the work has not changed in its essence. A vessel. A cargo. A port to reach. To set down a family's relationship with the sea is difficult work. Most memories carry no photograph; many a voyage survived only in the captain's mind.

Bir ailenin denizle ilişkisini anlatmaya kalkmak zor iştir. Çoğu hatıra fotoğrafsızdır, çoğu sefer sadece kaptanın aklında kalmıştır.

What is told here is what remained in writing. The rest is beneath the sea.

The family had been at sea for generations before the house was set down in its present form. Nineteen ten marks the year the firm takes its modern shape, in a period when Turkish shipping still ran on private houses rather than corporations.

Ev bugünkü biçimine kavuşmadan önce aile nesiller boyunca denizdeydi. Bin dokuz yüz on, firmanın modern biçimini aldığı yıldır; Türk denizciliğinin hâlâ şirketler yerine özel evler üzerinden yürüdüğü bir dönemde.

A captain's word carried the weight of a ledger then, and it is from that ledger, seven generations on, that the present house derives.

O zaman bir kaptanın sözü bir defterin ağırlığını taşırdı; yedi nesil sonra bugünkü ev, işte o defterden gelir.

In the War of Independence, the family played a distinguished role in organising maritime logistics through İnebolu for the Turkish National Forces. It was cargo the front could not lose, and the cargo arrived.

Aile, Kurtuluş Savaşı'nda Anadolu kıyılarına silah taşıdı. Cephe için kritik bir yüktü, ve yük yerine vardı.

In recognition of this service, Atatürk personally conferred upon the family the surname Yıldıran, a name signifying one who daunts the enemy and breaks his resolve.

Atatürk bu hizmet üzerine soyadımızı kendi eliyle koydu: Yıldıran. Düşmanı yıldıran, direncini kıran demek.

Today the firm works across four lines: owning, chartering, operations, and brokerage. The present form of the work the family has practised, in one shape or another, for seven generations.

Bugün firma dört kolda çalışıyor: armatörlük, kiralama, operasyon ve brokerlik. Ailenin yedi kuşaktır farklı biçimlerde yaptığı işin bugünkü hali.

Yıldıran Denizcilik Ltd. is, in the present, the maritime spine of the Portolan group.

Yıldıran Denizcilik Ltd., bugün Portolan grubunun operasyon belkemiğidir.
